The word TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. As the name implies the treatment consists of passing very mild electrical currents through the skin to affect the underlying nerve fibres. The action of this comfortable electrical stimulation on the nerves results in moderation of the pain signals which pass through these nerve fibres to the brain. The result can be a dramatic reduction in the pain perception or sometimes a complete elimination of the pain sensation. The most common pain conditions for TENS treatments include: osteoarthritis, back pain (especially low back pain), neck pain, fibromyalgia and many, many others. Several sports related injuries respond well to TENS (often in conjunction with muscle stimulation): tennis elbow, golf elbow, knee pain, postsurgical joint pain, shoulder subluxation, frozen shoulder and various other "sprains and strains".
