Non-gelled carbon-rubber electrodes come in an several sizes and shapes. Common sizes are 2"x2" for most TENS applications and 2"x4" for many NMES applications.

These electrodes are not self-adhering and also require the application of a water-based conductive gel to allow for transmission of the stimulation to the skin surface. These pads are generally held in contact with non-allergic tape of some sort.

Usage time is somewhat limited, as the gel has a tendency to dry out or be absorbed by the skin. Significant irritation can result when reduction in the conductive medium (gel) is pronounced.
